Research Topic III.
Hybrid materials based on conducting polymers (CPs) and inorganic semiconductors  (SCs) undoubtedly constitute one of the most promising classes of new materials. Beyond  scientific and fundamental interest, such hybrid assemblies are attractive from technological  perspectives as well, for example, in energy conversion & storage, electronics, catalysis, and  optics. CPs can be employed both as sensitizers and hole-transporters in such applications. In  this vein we assemble organized nanoarchitectures of CPs and oxide SCs.
Photoactive hybrid organic/inorganic assemblies based on conducting polymers
CPs are p-type semiconductors, therefore they can be used in photoelectrochemical reduction. We are studying various  energy related reactions in this manner, such as reduction of molecular O2. For example, the case of the PEDOT/iron-oxalate  layer, cathodic photocurrents showed a defined trend in correlation with the quantity of dissolved oxygen which can be exploited  in sensors.  We are assembling p/n heterojunctions of inorganic oxide SCs and CPs with organized nanoscale architecture.  Electrochemical anodization is employed to fabricate the nanostructured oxide hosts (TiO2, WO3, Nb2O5, V2O5).  Subsequently, both electrochemical and photoelectrochemical synthetic strategies can be deployed to obtain CP inside the  nanostructured host. Further, we aim to achieve fine tuning of the composition and structure of the hybrid assemblies, and thus  tailor the properties of the hybrid nanoarchitectures towards different applications.  References:  Photo-electrochemical sensor for dissolved oxygen, based on a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/iron oxalate  hybrid electrode Bencsik G, Lukacs Z, Visy C , ANALYST   Volume: 135   Issue: 2   Pages: 375-380 Electrochemical Grafting of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) into a Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Host Network   Janaky C, Bencsik G, Racz A, et al., LANGMUIR  Volume: 26  Issue: 16  Pages: 13697-13702  2010   Electrodeposited Polyaniline in a Nanoporous WO3 Matrix: An Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Exhibiting Both p- and n-  Type Photoelectrochemical Activity   Janáky C, de Tacconi NR, Chanmanee W, Rajeshwar K, JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C  Volume  116  Pages   4234-4242 Bringing Conjugated Polymers and Oxide Nanoarchitectures into Intimate Contact: Light Induced  Electrodeposition of Polypyrrole and Polyaniline on Nanoporous WO3 or TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Janáky C, de Tacconi NR, Chanmanee W, Rajeshwar K, JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C   Volume 116   Pages 19145-19155
