Course description:
Historical introduction, Huygens-Fresnel
principle, Young's principle. Mathematical preliminaries, Kirchhoff formulation
of diffraction, Rayleigh-Sommerfeld formulation of diffraction. Fresnel
and Fraunhofer diffraction. Fourier transform, angular spectrum. Examples
of diffraction patterns: rectangular aperture, circular aperture, diffraction
grating, diffraction at straight edge. Fourier tranforming and imaging
properties of lenses. Three-dimensional intensity distribution near focus.
