Course description:
Periodical structures; Bloch theorem.
Adiabatic and harmonic approach. Lattice oscillations; phonons; density
of states, specific heat of the phonon gas. Electronic states, one electron
states, Hartree, Hartree-Fock approximation. Density functional theory;
quasi-free electron approach. Tight binding model; pseudo-potentials. Nanostructures.
Statistics of electrons in metals and in semiconductors; dia- and paramagnetism;
Landau levels. Quantized fluxes. De Haas-van Alphen effect.
