Course description:
The problem of the reference system
in classical mechanics and in electrodynamics. Einstein's postulates of
the theory of relativity, Lorentz transformation; Minkowski space, relativistic
dynamics. Four-potential, the Lagrange function and the equation of motion
of a charged particle in an external field. Field tensor and the Maxwell
equations. Gauge invariance. Energy and momentum theorem. Static field,
Poisson equation, multipole momenta. Magnetic field of stationary currents,
magnetic momentum. Wave equation and plane wave solutions. Polarisation
properties of plane waves Retarded potentials, radiation field of localized
charge distribution; dipole radiation. multipole radiation. The field of
an arbitrarily moving point charge, Lienard-Wiechert potentials. The Lorentz
method of averaging microscopic fields. Polarisation charge, polarisation
current, magnetic current. Maxwell equations in continuous media. Wave
equations in dielectrics and metals.
